LoveReading4Kids Says
Following their adventures with Vikings, time-travelling twins Scarlett and Thomas are back, and this time, thanks to Grandad’s time machine, they’re in Roman Britain.
Scarlett finds herself a slave to Emperor Claudius’ daughter Antonia while Thomas meets a ten-year-old Boudicca, already set on driving the invading Romans out. This on-the-ground view of the opposing sides will make readers feel they are right there, whether in the Roman camp or hiding in the woods with the ancient Britons.
Josh Lacey portrays both Antonia and Boudicca as sympathetic characters, though the former is imperious to a fault, and the latter hell-bent on attacking Romans, whatever the consequences.
In a clever double helping of time travel, the twins first find themselves in the middle of the battle between the Roman forces and Boudicca’s troops, then go back twenty years earlier, Thomas determined to meet Boudicca when she was younger. It’s another terrific adventure story from Josh Lacey, exciting, gripping, full of historical detail, and really brings the period – one children have to study - to life.
