Alice Eclair, Spy Extraordinaire!: A Sprinkling of Danger

LoveReading4Kids Says

Alice Eclair is back for her third exuberant spy adventure in a series that boasts double-life intrigue, glamorous Gallic atmosphere, and lashings of mystery. As ever, author Sarah Todd Taylor has a gift for taking her plots in unexpected directions, and an artist’s eye for detail, with Beatriz Castro’s illustrations further flavouring this tasty treat for fans of character-driven mysteries.

Baker by day, spy by night, Alice Eclair leads an extraordinary life, and her third adventure arguably takes place in the series’ most glamourous context yet. An American production company is filming a movie about Marie Antoinette in the Palace of Versailles, and Alice’s co-spy Claude is convinced that the director is “a traitor, I’m sure of it. In the war he fought on our side, but he took too much interest in the movements of troops he had no connection to.” As a result, Alice undertakes a mission to infiltrate the movie set from the inside, while also being tasked with training new spy recruits.

On set, Alice’s prowess as a baker comes in rather useful, with camera work requiring the kind of steady hand she uses to make the perfect chocolate mousse. But with perils rising far faster than bread in an oven, Alice must deploy all her skills of detection and deduction.

In short, this Alice Éclair adventure is nothing but wildly inventive, utterly charming and edge-of-your-seat thrilling. Bravo!
