May 2012 Book of the Month. Within this attractive picture book with its touching story some useful advice is craftily hidden. The little hedgehog lives alone; he has never helped anyone and no one has ever helped him. But, when an apple falls on his prickles, however hard he tries, he can’t get it off. Luckily, he wanders into the donkey field. The donkey loves apples. Soon the hedgehog is free from the apple, the donkey is happy munching it and the two become friends. How the hedgehog learns the value of helping others and of having friends is gently explored in the words and the pictures that accompany them.
Isaac is a hedgehog who has only ever been alone - and that is the way he likes it. One day an apple falls from a tree and sticks onto the spines on his back. He wiggles and jiggles, but he cannot get it off. As he struggles to remove the apple, help comes in the unexpected form of a donkey who cannot reach the apples which fall outside of his paddock. Isaac learns that it is better to have a friend and to be helpful than to be on your own all of the time. Approximately 450 words.

Rosie Wellesley was born in London but grew up in Morocco, Pakistan and the west country. She studied as an undergraduate at L'ecole des Beaux Arts in Aix en Provence and at the Ruskin school of Drawing and Fine Art in Oxford.
