War has been declared and London schoolchildren are being evacuated to the countryside. Among them is Jack, a fatherless south London urchin with a defiant cockney wit. No one wants to take in cheeky Jack - until at the last minute Lady Ashwell turns up to do her patriotic duty and sweeps him off to the Hall. There he strikes up an unlikely friendship with her privately-educated son Clive and, while Jack learns how to hold a knife and fork, Clive is soon picking pockets and fighting dirty. At which point, sinister characters and black marketeers come on the scene, and Jack finds himself caught up in a real life adventure.
