He has been awarded an OBE and a CBE for services to poetry, and was recently honoured with The Freedom of the City of Liverpool. He is also a journalist, broadcaster and performer, who visits schools in the UK and abroad with his one-man show. He was Children's Laureate from 2007-9, using the post to be an ambassador of fun .
