"400+ pages of unputdownable magical adventure"
March 2024 Book of the Month
Anyone who hasn’t yet discovered Jaclyn Moriarty’s Bronte Mettlestone series is advised to do so as quickly as possible. A series of inter-linked though stand-alone fantasy stories set in the neighbouring world of the Kingdoms and Empires – lands like our own world though more old-fashioned and with a lot more magic – they’re ingeniously plotted, full of excitement and humour, and star a brilliantly colourful cast of characters.
The surprise gift of a pickle jar full of gold coins somehow opens up this magical world to 10-year-old Lillian Velvet and sets her on a series of short adventures in which she either helps someone or wishes she could (the wishing later turning out to be very important indeed). Lonely and isolated in modern day Australia, where she’s lived to this point, she makes lots of friends in these different worlds, and is determined to save all of them when they are threatened by a Shadow Mage, spinner of the worst kind of magic.
It’s impossible not to love Lillian, impossible not to be enchanted by her adventures; 400+ pages of sheer joy, this is one of those books that, the minute you finish it, send you right back to the beginning to start again.

The fifth magical adventure in the popular Bronte Mettlestone Adventure series
Welcome to the world of Lillian Velvet: a very proper girl named Lillian Velvet is living a very lonely life with a nasty grandmother; she's given a jar of coins, each with the power to take Lillian on a journey to a different time and place…and also to grant a single wish.
She comes across a small boy in a barn about to be crushed to death by a load of hay; a family, each member in mortal danger, who are strangers to Lillian (but whom clever readers will recognise...).
And a web of dangerous magic is closing tight around all. Who IS this Lillian Velvet? And what on earth is her secret?
