Based on the song by Cosmo Sheldrake, Come Along invites readers to embark on a splendidly absurd adventure in the company of a duo of delightfully-dressed rabbits who are determined to have fun ‘til sundown.
The spirit of “days gone by” is wondrously conjured by illustrator Linier’s Sendak-esque landscapes of woodland paths, oceans and shorelines, all populated by a cast of recognisable characters, including slithy toves and borogoves from Lewis Carroll’s Jabberwocky, and a heffalump, of Winnie-the-Pooh fame. There’s also a bucolic tea party scene that conjures Alice in Wonderland (look out for the dapper fox wearing a huge hat!) and a “hesitant skeleton” to cuddle up with at sea.
“Never ask us why”, the rabbits request, for this is a journey that bids readers to “run away from the humdrum”, and to “go to a place that is safe from/ greed, anger and boredom”. And who can argue with that? Radiant with whimsy, and propelled by compulsive rhythms and rhymes, every page makes it easy to embrace the joys of nonsensical indulgence, which makes Come Along great fun to read aloud in your silliest sing-song voice, ideally accompanied by the silliest actions you can muster.
