First in a series, Mìriam Bonastre Tur’s Marionetta is a gloriously gothic graphic novel that sets a suspenseful mood from the get-go, when Julia is asked “what have you done? Did you...did you just kill him?” before the action swiftly shifts to months earlier when Julia and her best friend Kamille board a busy bus, and Kamille notices that the only empty seat is beside “one of those ah’kon people”, a violet-eyed man with a badge on his forehead. 

When it turns out that the bus is packed with people who are going to the last night of the circus, Kamille persuades her strait-laced friend to go to the show, despite Julia’s misgivings that this will amount to them “having a wild party on a weekday with a bunch of drunk people!” But, as it’s the eve of Kamille’s 22 nd  birthday, Julia is persuaded. Everything begins well enough and the friends sit down to watch the travelling troupe, but when Kamille goes missing and doesn’t turn up for work the next day, Julia falls into a freaky world, where she’s issued with an impossible ultimatum.  

Such is the enticing sway of the story and illustrations, Marionetta will draw fans of fearsome fiction to get into the glories of graphic novels in a big way, from teenagers and young adults, through to adults.
