This book was wonderfully written and the world was real enough to get inside. I felt like I was really on an adventure with the characters, and it was delightful.
I loved The Outlaws Scarlett and Browne. I think it was wonderfully written and the world was real enough to get inside. I felt like I was really on the adventure with Scarlett and Albert, and they were delightful characters to go on an adventure with.
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to just escape and have some fun in another world for a while. I especially enjoyed how Scarlett and Albert’s relationship evolved throughout the story, and this progression allowed you as a reader to really get to know the characters and understand their motivations and thought processes, especially with Albert as his past was slowly revealed throughout the story which helped me connect with him and understand his experiences.
Also, the way Albert’s gift was portrayed was really ingenious, as it felt like something everyday that I didn’t question because it was normal for him, so it felt normal to me.
My only (slight) criticism is that I would have liked to see more explanation of what the ‘tainted’ creatures were, as they were not very deeply explored or explained and I would have been interested to understand where they came from and what they actually were.
This book is so cool! I love that the girl rescues the boy instead of the other way around which usually happens.
I loved this book. It is split into parts and chapters, which makes it easy to pick up and put down, although I didn’t want to put it down at all!
The book is set in England after some huge disaster, most of the land is flooded or abandoned and there are only a few towns left, the rest is just wilderness.
Scarlett is a strong girl who travels on her own from town to town robbing banks. She is an expert shot and has excellent survival skills. On one trip across the wilderness she comes across a crashed abandoned bus, which she decides to ransack for anything useful. It is here that Albert Browne drops out of the toilet on top of her and so their unusual friendship begins. They are both secretive about their pasts and for good reason.
Albert wants to get to the London Lagoon and asks Scarlett to help him. While trying to get there they get help from Joe and his granddaughter Ettie who have a raft. And so the adventure begins.
I absolutely loved this story. It uses some great language that helps you really imagine the characters and the scenery. The adventure is really great and made it really hard to put it down. I think there may be another one and I really can’t wait to get my hands on it if there is!
A really exciting, but at times scary, adventure story. Set in a lawless, future Britain, the story can be pretty dark at times, but also funny.
I really liked this adventure story. It is not like anything that I have read before. (I had never even heard of Jonathan Stroud before reading this book.)
The story is set in a future Britain. Britain is now split up, lawless and has lots of strange, dangerous beasts roaming about in it.
The two main characters are Scarlett McCain, a bank robber, and mysterious, Albert Browne. They team up together to escape their enemies. The book can be quite dark at times, but sometimes a bit funny. It was bit like a future Wild West.
I would definitely recommend this action packed book.
Phenomenal book! Couldn't put it down even when it was prised from my hands!
This is a very good book for anyone who wants an amazing time reading! I love the story, the mystery and the characters! The writing is phenomenal and the entire book is without a doubt the best I've read in a very long time! Stroud did a very good job with this book and I really enjoyed it!
This world is beautifully created and easy to picture in your mind, the characters are relatable and funny, incredibly addictive.
The worldbuilding in this novel is absolutely wonderful, you’re given a full understanding of the world and the problems in it, the characters are well-drawn out and details in their background make them almost real. They are easy to picture and the world they live in is well thought out. The plotline is well illustrated and the action sequences realistic and beautifully drawn. You can sympathise with aspects from both Scarlett & Albert, and they’re stories are easy to involve yourself in.
This was my first ever time reading a dystopian novel, it was tricky at times but worth it in the end.
This was a good read as each chapter was left on cliff hangers and made you just want to read on and on, however, there were loads of tricky words in all the chapters which made it a bit harder to read. The chapters were quite long which I found pretty annoying, but it was worth it in the end.
It was my first time ever reading a dystopian book with difficult words which made it a bit of a struggle. However, in the end, I absolutely enjoyed it.
My favourite character is Scarlett McCain as she is a very daring person and is kind when she wants to be. These are the reasons of why I like her: thoughtful at times, generous, helping, and caring towards Albert Browne. The boy Albert is kind but is very silly at times. He also lashes out sometimes which is kind of cool if you ask me.
As much as I enjoyed this book, I need to wait a while to read another book like this as it is hard for me to read it on my own. I would definitely recommend this book to all my friends.
Dark. Gripping. Dangerous. This book is unlike any I have ever read before, full of twists, cliff-hangers and characters you would rather avoid. You’ll be unable to put it down from start to finish as you watch the adventure between two most unlikely friends unfold. To complete their journey and find sanctuary, they must avoid the devilish creatures that lurk in murky waters and their deadly pursuers, intent on finding them.
If you like danger, adventures and unlikely duos, this book is for you. Set in Britain in a dark time of unrest, fighting and violence stalks the land, as well as a whole host of murderous creatures, set on eating and destroying you.
Scarlett McCain. A feisty red-headed girl, full of grit and determination. Albert Browne. A tall untidy, thin boy full of interest and childlike innocence. She wants only to survive and fight through. He wants to live and experience everything. But Albert is hiding a dark secret that sets him aside from everyone. He has uncontrollable power. He is being hunted and pursued across the kingdom by the terrifying Dr Calloway who is desperate to capture and take control of his power.
With the help of his reluctant new companion Scarlett, he unwillingly joins her in a series of thrilling bank robberies, kidnappings and murders, as well as close calls with the Tainted, demonic human-like creatures intent on the destruction of everything they encounter. Doctor Calloway, Albert’s captor, is a woman of death, emotionless and powerful. She will stop at nothing to get Albert back - but Scarlett will stop at nothing to keep Albert and herself safe.
The Outlaws Scarlett and Browne is such a riveting story. Twists and turns are thrown at you around every corner keeping you hooked and desperate to see what happens next!
The Outlaws Scarlett and Browne is such a riveting story that grips you from start to finish. Each chapter will have you begging for more, I was completely engrossed in the story, unable to put it down. It has themes of gore, slight mystery and is packed full of tension. Each character has depth and a story behind them. I felt empathy with each and every one of them, it was like they were my friends and I was really there. Twists and turns are thrown at you around every corner keeping you hooked and desperate to see what happens next!
I would recommend for anyone over twelve, or those who are ok with gory details and unexpected sadness and intrigue. Overall, Stroud has done an amazing job with this story, it is action packed and interesting all the way through. I highly recommend it!
A captivating read; I had to know more about the characters and where the plot would end!
A captivating book from the start, this was a really exciting read! The characters were unusual but believable and I wanted to know more about them. I loved the way the author manages to reveal just a little of the story and the characters with each chapter, and you want to know what happens next as the story draws you in and makes you want to read on.
The descriptions were vivid and I could easily imagine what was going on at each stage of story.
It was an unexpected plot, I couldn’t guess what would happen next ... I like the way it made me think about how things could change in the future, and not always in a good way, especially how we accept people who have different needs. I loved the description of London and how it could look in the future; it was really cool to imagine that.
I really want the author to write a sequel to this book: I want to read more!
