June 2016 Debut of the Month

In a Nutshell: pirates – penguins – enchantments

Eddy Stone and the Epic Holiday Mash-Up is an epic story indeed, and possibly the most inventive piratical comedy-fantasy-adventure you’ll read this year. It starts with Eddy finding a pirate captain in his gran’s bath. But, before you know it the two of them, plus a nice shopkeeper thereafter known as the Crew, and a penguin are on board their own pirate ship, the Codcake, and embarked on a treasure hunt that leads them from one fantastical place and adventure to another.  All the while pursued by the properly nasty Barracuda Bill!.  As quests go, it’s a cracker and very, very funny too. Polished and very original, this is Simon Cherry’s debut novel and hopefully the first of many. ~ Andrea Reece

For more zany and satisfying pirate adventures, don’t miss The Unlikely Adventures of Mabel Jones while David Solomon’s prize-winning My Brother is a Superhero is also fast, funny and well-written.

Eddy Stone and the Epic Holiday Mash-Up Synopsis

When Eddy finds a pirate in his gran’s bath, his miserable summer holiday becomes a treasure hunt! Setting sail in a ship-shaped shed, crewed by an old lady and a grumpy penguin, what could possibly stop their quest for booty? (Apart from the world’s most evil shopkeeper, a man-eating beast, and the maddest, baddest villain in all the seven seas.)

Eddy Stone and the Epic Holiday Mash-Up Reader Reviews

Kids love to read and so in addition to our Lovereading expert opinion some of our older Lovereading4kids Reader Review Panel were also lucky enough to read and review this title. You can read their full reviews by clicking here.

  • Daniel Bisland, age 8 - 'I give it 10/10. I recommend it to 8+ readers who love adventure! I found the book funny and liked the poem (Poem for the Captain) and the song (The Captain’s Seasick Sea Shanty).'
  • Lewis Briggs, age 9 - 'This book is excellent! If I could rate it, it would be a 10. I can't wait to read (if there is) the next book because I have a feeling it would be even better (if that's possible!)'
  • Ellen Cox, age 9 - 'Not as good as the blurb!'
  • Jennifer Wood, age 8 - 'Great read, a really different kind of story.'

Eddy Stone and the Epic Holiday Mash-Up Press Reviews

'A charming, surreal and batty trip into a world of Pythonesque Pirates , buried treasure and total silliness. Lovely' - Lenny Henry

'Oh how I wish the wonderfully told adventures of this unforgettable pirate and the boy who befriends him had existed when I was young. I shall pretend I still am and read them again and again' - Stephen Fry
