In a nutshell: unlikely band of animal friends win the day | Mr Straw’s pet shop, The Perfect Pet is the setting for this funny new series, its ill-assorted collection of pets - dog, budgie, chameleon, gerbil and slug – its stars. The shop might be untidy and customers thin on the ground but the animals are very happy there. They welcome new arrival pedigree cat Ursula to their crew, and when it looks like she’ll be bought – shock horror – rally round to put the prospective owners off. The Scruffs are a lovely collection of eccentrics and their exploits will keep young readers thoroughly entertained. Hannah Shaw’s own black and white illustrations break up the text and add to the fun.
