‘The Tale of Was and Das’ is a story by Marin of friendship and ambition. Was (pronounced Vas) and his talking German Shepherd, Das, live together at a dump halfway between the comically named Fartsville and Burptown. Through the story we see how Was met Das and how their plan to build the biggest dinosaur in the world could bring the two rival but equally ‘stinky’ towns together. There’s detailed full colour illustrations through the book from Peter Shan, which younger and older readers alike will revel in. As voracious readers, Was and Das have collected all the books they can find in the dump to create their own library and in these pictures, I found myself pausing to see the titles on the spines. But it’s their love of dinosaur books that inspire the big building project. I think younger readers would love the story and the pictures although they may need an older sibling or parent to help them through each paragraph and enjoy the story alongside them. Warm hearted and a little surreal, I'm sure there’s plenty of places younger readers will chuckle in this story that has a subtle underlying message of teamwork, community spirit and recycling.
