Nicholas Allan’s The King’s Pants reinvents his bestselling The Queen’s Knickers for a new generation. It’s an exuberantly irreverent story (the perennial popularity of pants cannot be denied!) that also conjures King Charles’ personality through said pants being organic, and “made with finest cotton, wool from Welsh sheep and whole rolled oats from the Scottish Highlands.” What’s more, they’re edible!
Put simply, the King cannot rule without his pants! He even has a devoted Keeper of King’s Pants, whose role it is to furnish him with the right pants for every occasion, from Everyday Pants, to Weekend Pants, to Coronation Pants.
As a result, mayhem ensues when the King’s sack of royal pants gets mixed up with a Royal Mail delivery and all his subjects receive a set of regal pants. After a nationwide operation recovers the King’s pants, a new Royal Pants app is created to prevent future underwear mishaps. Ultimately, though, the King reverts to an old school way of choosing his daily pants!
With the illustrations presenting young readers with lots of details to giggle over, The King’s Pants, is a whimsically comic caper.
