Ahead of a major Disney+ series, Percy Jackson is back in majorly epic, witty style, with The Chalice of the Gods being Rick Riordan’s first full-length, first-person novel from Percy’s point of view since 2009’s The Last Olympian. As such, this is an unexpected treat for long-time fans of the series, and also the perfect entry-point for readers who’ve yet to discover the joy of Percy’s mythological adventures - it also works as a superb standalone novel.

Having saved the world on several occasions, The Chalice of the Gods sees Percy facing a fresh quest for a different reason, albeit a quest that’s every bit as challenging as his previous tasks. Now a high school senior, who’s hoping his dad could write him a note requesting, “Please excuse Percy Jackson from school forever and just give him the diploma”, Percy discovers that if he wants to get into New Rome University, his application requires divine recommendation letters from three different gods. As for how he’ll bag these letters, “I have to do new quests for three gods. And the requests have to come from them.” Gadzooks!

Percy’s first request comes from Ganymede, cupbearer of the gods, whose golden chalice has been stolen. Given that sipping from the cup can transform mere mortals into all-powerful gods, Ganymede needs it back ASAP, before word gets out, and before Zeus schedules an in-person feast.

Percy, Annabeth and Grover sure have their hands full as they set about finding the chalice, with the adventure unfolding in typically funny, high-octane style.
