"Find out and celebrate what it means to be a pride family with this inclusive and welcoming picture book."
Roshni has two mums, making them the perfect person to introduce us to the many types of family that come under the pride umbrella. Putting pride families firmly into the wider context of modern families, Roshni demonstrates that family doesn’t have to mean a mum, a dad and 2.5 children.
Each letter of LGBTQIA is simply and succinctly defined. Obvious family structures are covered, such as single parent and step families, as are more complex family set-ups. This is a book that endeavours to acknowledge a host of different family structures, with the enduring message that what matters most is love. Topics such as adoption, pregnancy, fostering, surrogacy, and pro-nouns are all handled sensitively and informatively.
The educational text is beautifully complemented by muted rainbow-hued illustrations. Flags representing different groups of the LGBTQIA community are the backdrop to every page, creating a comforting consistency and underpinning the subjects covered. The illustrations also add a level of intersectionality to the book, both in terms of race and physical disability representation.
A helpful “notes for adults” section at the end provides a short glossary of key terms, an explanation of the difference between gender and sexuality, and information on poly relationships, bisexual, single and transgender parents. All promoting open-mindedness and the importance of not making assumptions.
Educational and accessible; a must-have book for children of pride families, but also an important book to normalise and explain different family structures to all children.
