Frightened by bombs and taking refuge in a shelter with her mum and their little dog, while her father is away fighting, she imagines her toy astronaut as ‘super powerful … in the sky’, watching over everything from above.
Messages from her friends and from people across the world give her strength and when they are forced to leave their home in Kyiv, she and her mum look forward to the time when the war will be over and silent nights are normal again.
Carefully chosen words and distinctive, stylised illustrations, flooded with the yellow and blue of the Ukrainian flag, create a real sense of the child’s experience of the war, as well as the Ukrainian people’s resilience, and of hope for the future.
