"Atmospheric and action-packed, this pacey illustrated novel follows four friends on a thrilling, gothic adventure as they battle the supernatural, shadowy organisations, suspicions, betrayals, and their own demons."
Twins Jax and Jovi live in the town of Moonhaven, where a monthly curfew is enforced on every full moon night to keep the population safe from the threat of a werewolf attack – but are things really as they seem?
This atmospheric and action-packed illustrated novel, with plenty of twists and just the right level of ‘spook’, is the perfect entry into the horror genre for young readers, and a thoroughly modern take on the legend of the werewolf. The twins and their friends Esau and Fourth form a wonderfully relatable central cast, each with their own strengths and human flaws as they contend with missing parents, shadowy organisations, suspicious, secrets, and the supernatural!
Very short chapters of around 2-4 pages each, and sections named for notable full moons in the annual calendar – the Strawberry Moon, the Harvest Moon, and so forth – contribute to a brilliantly pacey narrative, perfect for readers in Key Stage Two who are building their reading confidence. Biddulph’s bold black-and-white illustrations appear throughout, establishing character, setting, and particularly atmosphere, with great use of gothic silhouettes and shadows. There is also plenty of rich discussion to be had around such themes as rebellion, propaganda, questioning the status quo, and the use of fear as a means of control.
Stay tuned for the cinematic climax, and a final twist which leaves things wide open for a sequel and a return to the world of Moonhaven.
