Windy Corner is the fourth book in the Laura McNaughty Adventure series. Laura is already well known for her care of animals, and for the mischief she used to get up to when she was younger. In this standalone story she finds a dog washed up on the rocks and takes it to be looked after, enjoys camping trips, fishing and visits to an abandoned lighthouse and puts her old mischievous ways to good use to stop a pair of badger baiters.

This is a series that would appeal to animal lovers, as Laura’s passion for nature and all animals shines through the storyline. Windy Corner has short chapters that will benefit those who are newer to independent reading, and the storyline moves quickly which will keep younger readers engaged.

Although this is a standalone story, it does reference events and rescues of “a few weeks ago” a few times. I’m assuming these references connect to adventures covered in the previous books in the series. It’s not vital to know these stories in order to follow the plot, it just hints that there is more to know.

This book is also timeless, there’s plenty of scope for adventures outdoors, mornings meeting her friends at the Tidal pool, and camping trips away. There’s no mention of when they go to school, it suggests long summer days for exploring.

A quick read, those with a keen love of animals will enjoy Laura’s confidence in exploring the harbour town she lives in and her interactions with the different types of wildlife there.

Bright and colourful illustrations. Nice relatable brother, sisters relationship. Overall, it is a good story.

Bright and colourful illustrations. Begins as a gentle tale about three friends who live by the sea. The main character, Laura loves animals so when her dog finds a dog near some rocks on the beach. She takes it to the horse doctor in the woods and promises to come back to help look after it. The writing creates an idyllic scene by the beach with islands and sand and the woods have a feeling of being a bit mysterious. There is good description of the pretty local village The three friends play in the sea with some seals and we learn that animals seem to trust Laura.... Read Full Review
