How is Tiddles the cat meant to take a nice, relaxing nap when his owners have installed an enormous, distractingly sparkly tree in the middle of the living room? It’s time for Tiddles to take matters into his own paws... This seasonal battle of cat versus Christmas tree is brilliantly narrated in the voice of Tiddles, with bold, kinetic typography - “A TREE growing RIGHT HERE in MY living room!” - that lends itself brilliantly to reading aloud.
Independent publisher Post Wave Children’s Books does incredible work spotlighting global creators and bringing beautiful books in translation to a wider audience. I love the use of kennings that Tiddles uses to describe himself - “snack stealer, whisker wizard, couch clawer, nap ninja” - and the alliteration of “sofa scratching, rug ripping, curtain climbing”, and can’t help but wonder how these poetic phrases sound in Christodoulou’s original Greek text.
Digital collage illustrations bring the story and the environment to life, and the use of double-page spreads allow for immersive, dynamic action scenes, such as the montage of Tiddles engaged in full battle mode against the “jolly little red-and-white man” who adorns the tree. Stamatiadi’s artwork captures the physicality of a cat so perfectly – anyone who has spent time with a cat will surely recognise the leaping, curling, stretching, almost liquid form of Tiddles!
Similarly to Chris Haughton’s Oh No, George!, the reader is rooting for Tiddles to do the right thing, but can only sit back and watch the chaos unfold. A cheeky cliffhanger shows that Tiddles’ Christmas mischief is far from over...
