As a school librarian, I often struggle to understand how to communicate the rapidly evolving AI / technology landscape. It can be an overwhelming, intimidating and even scary place sometimes, especially for younger students.

As much as I personally push back on it, I am not unaware of the fact that AI will most likely play a big role in my life and the lives of the people I care about. This is why a text like Craig Steele’s From AI to Wi-Fi is so important because it helps define what the internet is and why it plays a big role in our lives.

I really love the illustrations throughout the book, they are bright, cheery and clear, they help the reader absorb the information and Steele’s writing mirrors this - it’s clear and concise, funny and upbeat. These are all things we need in today’s world, an optimistic look at something that can be viewed by many in a negative light.

The book discuss several aspects of AI, how it changes the way we use the internet - specifically to find answers to questions faster than the way the traditional internet used to provide us. It’s important to note that Steele ensures the reader still needs to double check the answers that AI provides and I think that’s where we need librarians and teachers to also get involved, but this book is a great place to start teaching those responsible research skills.

Instead of having someone fall down a rabbit hole of different web sites to research a topic, people are letting AI summarise thousands if not millions of sites for them to get the info they need. A good idea on the surface, but as the book explains, there are risks to this because we aren’t always checking the sources.

From AI to Wi-Fi also provides ways to protect your personal data and why it’s important to do so. With activities sprinkled throughout the text, this is a must-have for librarians, teachers and parents alike.
