Scoop, wiggle, wiggle, Mole is digging a shelter, a great grand hole. Around him, other animals are building too – Bird, Beaver and Bee – and each claims that their house is superior to Mole’s. Undeterred, unbothered even, Mole keeps working away, cutaway cross-sections showing us just how great and grand his shelter really is.
When a storm breaks, Mole immediately invites his neighbours to join him. Initially they refuse the invite, and not that politely to be honest, but as the wind picks up and the rain pours down, they change their minds and find a warm welcome in Mole’s cosy and spacious home.
Mole’s unswerving focus on his digging and the other animals’ boasting provide plentiful opportunities for humour while the happy ending shows us all the importance of kindness, generosity and of not judging on appearances.
Kasia Fryza’s illustrations are full of energy and Will Hamilton-Davies’ rhyming text will have youngsters quickly joining in and this quirky picture book is full of fun.
