The Silver Dwarf, fourth book in Victor Kloss’ Royal Institute of Magic series, is a whopper in terms of scale and content. At 486 pages, it represents quite a commitment for its intended 9+-year-old audience, but happily, in the way of Harry Potter, long-time devotees of the series will be swept up in its waves of fantastical adventure, and the development of its characters and magical realm, with a new quest seeing friendships tested as Ben seeks a magical key linked to the legend of the Silver Dwarf.

Still in the midst of his overarching high-stakes mission to unite elements of Queen Elizabeth I’s armour in order to combat the rise of evil elves, on entering a passageway inside a hill, Ben, Natalie and Charlie make a grim discovery: dead dwarves and dark elves “sprawled everywhere, caked in blood, with weapons cross-crossing their bodies”.

They also spy a living dwarf in a trance-like state, on account of him having entered the protective “void” to shield his body from harm in the physical world. Reeling with questions, the presence of a strange symbol, etched on a wall in blood, provides the trio with the first part of a puzzle that sees them race against time to find the next piece of Elizabeth’s armour.

Fast-paced, with snappy dialogue driving its urgent quest, and underpinning its exploration of friendship and courage, The Silver Dwarf is likely to please fans of Percy Jackson and Harry Potter.
