When Tia wins a trip to Venice in an art competition, she’s excited to take her brother with her. As, despite his extreme clumsiness, Thomas has been a great support to Tia since she lost her sight. The trip is wonderful, until Tia mysteriously disappears. Thomas is convinced Tia has been kidnapped, but when nobody believes him, he determines to find his sister himself.

An exciting adventure story, with a fabulous setting and an impossible-not to-love main character. Year 6 Thomas loves physics and learning about the brain, with a near-photographic memory he is excited to discover the beauty of Venice and walk in his hero, Leonardo da Vinci’s, footsteps. His excitement is only marred by the fear his clumsiness will land him in trouble. His love for his sister and determination to find her is palpable throughout the story. Whilst Tia is a great example of a strong girl and provides a positive example of a blind person. She refuses to rely on her brother all the time and is adamant that she can be as heroic as anybody else.

Rich, luminous descriptions of Venice bring the city to life, so much so that you could almost imagine yourself there. More than once, I felt I was drifting along in a gondola, marvelling at stunning architecture myself! The siblings’ trip coincides with the Venetian Carnivale season, so expect decadent costumes and elaborate masks.

With all the hallmarks of a future classic, this is an adventure not to be missed. Perfect for fans of The London Eye Mystery.
