All Jack wants to do is keep himself and his family safe after his father died four years ago. The last thing Jack needs is an adventure, but when another dull class with Mr Brown ends with him being handed an envelope to get out of school, that’s exactly what he’s dragged into. With a promise of help for his family, Jack finds himself taking part in a mission to save the King’s Coronation from disaster.

Jack is a likeable main character, he cares deeply for his family and losing his dad has made him very focused on safety. He is endearing and as I read I enjoyed seeing this mission start to push him back out of the safety zone he’s built for himself. The supporting cast of characters are vibrant and quirky.

I think they’ll get a smirk and a laugh from young readers, like Mr Brown’s unexpected spy tactics and Gran with the outlandish contests and exploits at her Active Elderly care home. I also liked Tess a lot, she is an understanding and supportive friend that also provides an additional nudge of encouragement.

Her love of adventure was a great companion for Jack on this first mission. The story flowed well, providing lots of obstacles to be overcome but without losing the pacing that I think will keep readers keen to find out what happened next. Junior Agent Jack and the Coronation Chaos is a daft and entertaining start of a jam-packed spy adventure series.
