"A fascinating fact- filled visual guide that is a brilliant class resource and a book that will appeal to any young space fans out there"
October 2026 Book of the Month
Stunningly illustrated in the author’s distinctive style and with an inviting premise of being an actual space tour, where we the readers are boarding the spaceship with the most knowledgeable and friendly guide accompanying us, this is a highly appealing book on a very popular topic.
So, the book opens with ‘ This is your Captain speaking..’ and the itinerary (or contents list) is at the bottom of the page telling us what we have ahead of us together with a handy safety guide recommending that we stay in our seat!
Every two-page spread in this beautifully designed book reinforces the thrill of our imagined journey as we hear information about what we will experience (everything floats, we may feel sick, and we’ll have a special vacuum to use in the bathroom!) I also like the witty headings for each spread ‘Here Comes the Sun’ and ‘Mercury – On to Crater Things’ etc. But the humour does not take anything away from the clear and well explained information boxes.
Each stop on our trip comes with some standard information, such as the diameter of the object we’re visiting, its size relative to Earth, and its surface temperature, and if it is a planet stop, we are told how many moons they have and how long one year and one solar day last on their surface. The information about the planetary moons and about such things as the largest volcano in the universe, Olympus Mons on Mars or Titan’s strange beaches are not often covered in books at this level, so even the most dedicated fan is likely to find something new and fascinating.
The illustrations, as well as being colourful and attention grabbing are actually very good infographics. For example, the comparison between Mount Everest and the aforesaid Olympus Mons and the section on space rocks clearly shows how to distinguish between dwarf planets, asteroids, comets, and meteoroids.
The layout is well thought through with text in a large clear font always being legible against the background and not obscuring any of the illustration. A superb curriculum support for any Space topic but also an engaging and entertaining individual read.
