Introducing Tilda Jones in a sweet picture book that celebrates self-acceptance. Tilda Jones likes her quiet time alone with Rainbow Bear. She likes spending time with her best friend Bella, who loves to play games, talk a lot and invite other children to join them. Sometimes it all gets too noisy for Tilda and she needs her “Tilda Time” again, peace and quiet in order to recharge.
Tilda Jones Likes Her Own Way is an interesting picture book with an important message, to not only celebrate your differences and that it’s ok to be yourself, but also to know when you might need to take your own version of Tilda Time to recharge. Sometimes the world is busy and loud and Tilda is a good example of doing things at your own pace, and moving away when it’s required.
The story is very accepting of Tilda’s quieter ways and Bella’s more outgoing nature. By showing both the book is demonstrating that it’s ok to be either character, and it’s also ok to be both at times. The clear simple text on a white background makes the text easy to read for young children that may want to start reading more independently.
The colourful yet soft illustrations filling the accompanying page are great for young children to see the story, and may be a strong layout for reading with children as a group. The illustrations have a gentle colour palette that give a very calming feel to the story, which I think works well with Tilda’s quieter nature but also in creating the right atmosphere to get the message across to a young reader.
