Starring a little girl and her best friends, four tiny, talking dogs, and with its lively stories and charming colour illustrations, this series has an irresistible appeal for new readers.

In this episode, Bea is having her first sleepover and persuades the tiny dogs to do the same. They are all set with home made bunting, little blankets and sleeping hats made by Bea, and a handful of fresh popcorn to snack on. Everything is arranged just as beautifully for Bea’s sleepover too, but the sudden arrival of an unexpected and uninvited guest seems set to spoil everything.

Fortunately, Bea’s calm, peaceful nature, and the discovery of a baby bird that desperately needs help brings everyone together with firm new friendships made.

The premise of the four tiny dogs is delightful but their adventures in Bea’s perfectly realised garden are just as appealing and this is a book that celebrates friendship, nature and the pleasures of the simple things. Other first chapter books with a similar appeal are Harriet Muncaster’s Isadora Moon and Emerald stories, which also place a gentle emphasis on friends, family and being happy in yourself.
