"This comic caper sees all manner of chaos unleashed when Tartarus Hotel hosts a celebrity wedding and a ghost’s birthday party on the very same day."
All hands are on deck at the ghost-infested Tartarus Hotel in Ghouls Just Wanna Have Fun, second book in Catherine Doyle's Scare B'n'B series. Not only is this the family’s first Christmas season at the hotel, but their first wedding booking is also on the horizon. Given that the happy couple are none other than a celebrity pop star and the wealthy heir to a confectionary empire, the occasion is set to be a “glitzy, over-the-top spectacle to rival the fanciest of royal weddings”.
What could possibly go wrong?! Plenty, given that the Duke of Snoring, “the long-dead yet irritatingly ever-present ghost who had appointed himself Chief Spooker of their brand-new hotel”, has a habit of making mischief. So, Ted tries to convince the duke to stop inviting ghostly guests until after the wedding.
Unfortunately, as the duke explains. “a wedding, like any big life event, is bound to attract lost spirits. Especially ones who have unfinished business when it comes to love”. If that wasn’t tricky enough, the duke decides to host his 363rd birthday party in the hotel on the same day as the wedding, which means step- siblings Ted and Frankie have their work cut out keeping things under control while their older brother Luke is in lurve with the hotel’s social media manager!
Enhanced by Rachael Dean’s lively illustrations, which include maps and characterful vignettes, Ghouls Just Wanna Have Fun is a riot of fast-paced pandemonium for 9+-year-old fans of frightfully funny fiction: think BBC TV show Ghosts meets Alex Milway’s Hotel Flamingo books.
