Part of the Skulduggery Pleasant Series
Winner of the Irish Book Award. Danger, daring and dead bodies lie at the heart of this thrilling detective story. Skulduggery Pleasant, the DI whose name lives up to his looks, is back for a second set of hideous adventures. Now Baron Vengeous is out of prison…Can Skulduggery stop him from getting the deadly armour of Lord Vile? This book is the follow up to the author's debut novel Skulduggery Pleasant.
The Lovereading comment:
Skulduggery, the sharply-dressed skeleton detective is at it again in another startling and hilarious adventure in which Skulduggery, master of powerful magic, teams up with his sidekick to save the world. Problem: his sidekick is a 12-year-old girl. Once again Derek Landy has served up a roller-coaster ride of wit, skulduggery and magic, with brilliantly drawn characters and a plot-line that’s thicker than blood.

Just when you think you've saved the world! "You will kill her?" the Torment asked. Skulduggery sagged. "Yes." He hesitated, then took his gun from his jacket. "I'm sorry, Valkyrie," he said softly. "Don't talk to me," Valkyrie said. "Just do what you have to do." Valkyrie parted her tunic, and Skulduggery pointed the gun at the vest beneath. "Please forgive me," Skulduggery said, then aimed the gun at the girl and pulled the trigger. With Serpine dead, the world is safe once more. At least, that's what Valkyrie and Skulduggery think, until the notorious Baron Vengeous makes a bloody escape from prison, and dead bodies and vampires start showing up all over Ireland. With Baron Vengeous after the deadly armour of Lord Vile, and pretty much everyone out to kill Valkyrie, the daring detective duo face their biggest challenge yet. But what if the greatest threat to Valkyrie is just a little closer to home!?

Reader Review (Hugh, 13).
It's a brilliant follow-on to the first book and it picks up the story straight away. It ties up many loose ends from the first book but it also leaves many questions and it has set up a brilliant cliff-hanger for the third book to begin. The characters have been developed so well that they are almost real people. It is not all just magic and action, there are some hilarious lines that had me in fits of laughter. All in all I think it was a great book and I am looking forward to the sequel.

Derek Landy is far too modest to talk about any awards or accolades his books may have won. He will not, for instance, mention the fact that his first book, Skulduggery Pleasant, won the Bord Gais Energy Irish Book of the Decade Award AND the Red House Children's Book Award, or that his second, Playing With Fire, won an Irish Book Award for Children's Book of the Year, or that his third, The Faceless Ones, is his mother's personal favourite. He could go on, all the way to The End of the World, which is the title of the story ...
