Part of a superb series, David Long’s What It Was Like to Be...a Norman deploys publisher Barrington Stoke’s characteristic dyslexia friendly-format and accessible style as it shares engaging detail on who the Normans were, how they came to enhance their hold, and how they left their mark.
After handy visual profiles of key players from both sides of the Channel, Long launches into a lucid explanation of who the Normans were, relating their origins as formidable Viking “pirates and ferocious warriors” who “would arrive by sea to rob, kill or enslave anybody who got in their way”.
In time, the Vikings shifted to trade and farming, with some settling in the area of France that came to be called Normandy. Covering William the Conqueror’s long-held desire to become king of England, and his anger that Harold, a usurper in Norman eyes, had been crowned king, we then move to the battle of 1066, which of course had monumental impact on Britain.
Then follows lively detail on that impact as Long relates how the Normans built castles across the country, and imposed their social customs and religious beliefs, constructing grand cathedrals and embarking on the Crusades.
Finishing off with a fascinating “How Norman Are You?” round-up of the Norman legacy in England, What It Was Like to Be...a Norman is lucid, lively and ideal for classroom use, and for kids to get into history at home. Visually it’s spot on too, thanks to Stefano Tambellini’s maps and illustrations doing an excellent job of condensing the text into easy-to-digest images, with illustrations (of castles, daily life, the Bayeux Tapestry, and more) drawing out pertinent elements of the text, thereby enhancing the book’s accessibility.
