As one might expect from a twice winner of the Kate Greenaway Medal, this is a beautiful book, illustrated with the most gorgeous watercolours that celebrate both the natural environment and evocative human connections.
This is the story of Jack’s summer spent away from his city home, transported to the countryside to stay with his beloved grandfather. He likes nothing better than exploring the local woods and river, listening to stories of his grandfather’s youth and learning more about the wildlife they can see around them- especially if they remain quietly in the den they build together.
This is a perfect example of the benefits of a screen free life for children. When it rains, they make bird boxes and Grandad keeps Jack enthralled with stories of his life as a sailor. But the peace of the countryside is shattered by a very topical event – fly tipping! The river and pond are dangerously polluted and the wildlife at risk. They both set to immediately to clear it up and are joined by neighbours in the morning, which gives a fabulous message about communities working together.
This is a delightfully absorbing story with lots to spot and talk about. It doesn’t hector or lecture but gives a gentle positive message about looking after the environment and, of course, is a lovely, warm representation of a strong cross generational bond.
