It’s the first in a trilogy and although this book can be read as a standalone the reader is left with a brilliantly chilling taster of what is to follow in book 2 and luckily Book 2 - Perfectly Reflected - is now published as is the third one - Scattering Like Light.
The trilogy as a whole is a powerful sequence of interlinked romantic fantasy novels, following the relationship between a normal London teenaged girl who finds a bracelet in the Thames and, through it, an extraordinary connection with the hidden beings who died in the river, and must now consume human happiness to exist.

Sue Ransom, the author of the Small Blue Thing trilogy, is a senior headhunter, but on the way to work and in the evenings she’s a writer: she wrote Small Blue Thing, her debut novel, as a birthday present for her daughter, and she composed it mostly on her BlackBerry. Serendipity led her to publishers Nosy Crow and she’s now busy writing her fourth novel. She lives with her husband and two teenage children in Surrey.
