This latest story featuring the irresistible Adventuremice, will really resonate with exhausted Early Years staff and parents, since it certainly captures the total mayhem that tiny mice or humans can create, as well as totally engaging young audiences.

As with all successful series which bridge the gap between picturebooks and chapter books, this could be children who might be proud of being able to read it for themselves or those relishing the tale being read aloud. The adults will certainly empathise with Mrs Watermouse, the headteacher of the nursery school, who absolutely leaps at the suggestion, impulsively made by Fledermaus and Pedro after their rescue of several of her charges adrift on the back of a turtle, that she should bring her pupils to see the Mousebase sometime.

When she promptly zips over the next day and deposits the young mice and escapes to some downtime in Pampelmousse Beauty Parlour, the rest of the Mousebase crew are not so keen on the idea. But they all gamely take a turn in trying to keep the mouselets occupied and out of trouble.

Bosun tries baking, Skipper, tries demonstrating knots and Meepie ,their mermaid friend, evens tries swimming lessons, but each lesson descends into chaos.

When an emergency distress call requires immediate action, the crew are only too delighted to leave Fledermaus and Pedro to manage alone. Little do they know the distress call is a fake devised by Skipper’s dastardly twin brother Gorgonzola, who plans to take over the Mousebase while the crew are gone.

But with real ingenuity and bravery and some hilarious dressing up, Pedro and Fledermaus and the mini mice manage to defend the base until Skipper and the crew return. There are celebrations all round, but still a lot of relief when Mrs Watermouse comes to collect her charges and horror when she suggests they make it a regular outing!

Another fabulous and funny adventure that is the perfect blend of words and superb full colour illustrations. Newly confident readers like nothing better than a series. They appreciate the fact that they can feel confident that they will be able to cope with the format and look forward to revisiting characters they enjoy and when the stories are of this quality, it is a pleasurable experience all round.

Series like these are a really crucial aid to building reading confidence and Adventuremice is an absolutely exceptional example of the format and should be available in every class or home library.
