From the author who brought us the hugely enjoyable Pencil’s Greatest Story Ever, we have another eponymous narrator in Parcel, who grabs the reader’s attention from the off. He is all taped up and labelled and ready to go... Can we guess where he is going or how he will get there?
A book which is a delightful example of secret learning because this genuinely does educate young readers about the complex processes between posting an item and the recipient receiving it. It might have fantastical elements like the sorting octopus or the real-life mail snail, but the processes are all there.
Pass the Parcel is a universally played party game so the continued refrain will add to the lively atmosphere while reading. There is a fantastic use of action words and adjectives throughout this jaunty tale – OVER and UNDER etc. Parcel’s journey takes him across the sea and into a plane, before a scary jump to his destination.
This could spark questions about family who live in other countries and how our mail gets to them. Unfortunately, nobody will admit to having ordered Parcel, until at last Cat admits it was him and then we see that the box is empty! This is, of course a reference to the beloved classic: My Cat Likes to Hide in Boxes by Eve Sutton. Anybody who owns a cat will not need the explanatory text, but what a great opportunity to share another great picturebook!
There are so many details to entrance young readers on every page with the lively illustrations reminiscent of Richard Scarry, this is another lively and rewarding read from an author/ illustrator to follow.
