"Bringing prehistory excitingly to life for young nonfiction fans, budding palaeontologists and dinosaur lovers who want to know what happened next."
This stunning, dramatically illustrated, narrative nonfiction tells the story of the famous 1970’s discovery of the skeleton of Lucy, our earliest ancestor, and of the Laetoli Footprints by Mary Leakey and her team of palaeontologists, in a really engaging and accessible way.
It starts by showing young readers how very different our world looked three hundred million years ago and the dramatic tectonic forces which shaped the land masses we know as continents today.
Then it imagines Lucy’s world in the Africa of four million years ago and the creatures that roamed there, in the shadow of the very active volcanoes. These were responsible for the ash deposits that in turn preserved the footprints that were discovered many millennia later, in Tanzania. It creates a story behind the footprints and how they were made, while also showing us a vivid, natural world both similar and completely different to the world today.
Young readers will be amazed by the ancient animals depicted, not least because some of them can still be seen today. It brings evolutionary processes and how we can learn about our distant past, vividly to life. The latter part of the book focuses on the discovery and again imagines in playful detail how the discovery was made and the impact upon Mary herself, as well as recreating the way the discovery was reported.
This emphasises just how important the discovery was and how it changed our understanding of human evolution.
This will make a fascinating addition to prehistoric collections and would be a great introduction to the curriculum topic of Stone Age life.
