From the award-winning author of the fabulous Dadaji’s Paintbrush, comes another story which reflects the life of a child of Hindu heritage growing up in Britain, the like of which she didn’t see in books when she was growing up.

It is a joyous and heartwarming introduction to the Diwali festival through the eyes of Jai, a very excited young boy with an extended family who enjoy preparing for a festival which celebrates the values of gratitude and sharing. With the lively cartoon like illustrations bringing a real bounce and enjoyment to the different activities on each of the days of the festival and a text which layers fascinating little details of a celebration that is about spreading light, sharing and being grateful for what you have.

Jai is a very observant child and cannot help but notice members of his community, like the new girl in his class and a lonely neighbour who are not feeling joyous and excited. Inspired by the idea of spreading light, he makes invitations to the Diwali party at the temple, not just for those he was worried about, but for all his neighbours and friends.

At the back of the book there is also a fascinating spread which gives more detail about the five days of Divali and the legends and traditions of each. This will be an invaluable help in the primary classroom where Hinduism is being studied, but this is also a beautifully written, heartwarming story for all to enjoy as a read aloud or independently.
