Anyone who is even the slightest bit introverted will find this boldly illustrated picture book has a particular resonance.
Solo is off to the park, which is full of children all running about and shouting. As she stands and watches, a boy called Jesse invites her to come and play too.
It’s great for a bit, but then Solo needs some – well – solo time and heads off to be on her own. That’s not a problem, she explains to Jesse, it’s fun to enjoy things quietly and on our own sometimes, and when she’s ready, she’s happy to return to the ‘busy, whizzy’ part of the park.
Neil Clark’s risograph-style illustrations create all the non-stop action of the playground, Solo picked out in yellow amongst pink and blue crowds of dashing children, but are just as good at showing us Solo in her quiet place, finding herself again as the background turns to greens. His story shows us the richness of both worlds, while unobtrusively making the point that being alone is not the same as being lonely, indeed, far from it.
Solo’s story will validate the shyer ones amongst us, and point louder, more outgoing souls towards a different way of being, one they just might enjoy.
