We learn when the flag was introduced – fascinating in itself – and what its appearance means, what the colours represent, and what any stars, coats of arms or other special elements symbolise. This is all accompanied by clear maps, and there are even bonus maps on topics such as time zones and journeys of exploration, not to mention a whole section on pirate maps and flags.

Eye-opening, brightly illustrated and intriguing, this will stimulate and entertain all young geographers and everyone else besides. My favourite flag fact is on page 76 and concerns the flag of Nepal (population 31 million). Look it up!
