Exploring the magic of doing a good deed. Pip the squirrel was bounding through the trees, a stumble and fall later and pip sits up to realise he unintentionally saved some chipmunks from a falling branch. Bolstered by their praise Pip sets out to be a hero, but protecting an egg leads to a damaged nest and the tide of opinion turns even though he was trying to be helpful. In a quiet moment away from the crowds, Pip returns something lost and in doing so discovers the magic of a truly good deed. A little story about doing the right thing is filled with bright and dynamic illustrations by Kadysha. The story contains a good message about kindness and thoughtfulness showing the difference between coincidentally doing the right thing, trying to do what you think is right but perhaps for the wrong reasons, and then truly doing something because it’s the right thing to do, without credit. The final pages also show how good deeds and kindness can spread the illustrations, aptly joining forest animals together with a bright light. I think this is a colourful, endearing story to be read with young children. I think the message about spreading kindness is sweet and well presented. I think that it creates a chance to talk about self worth and the true value of doing the right thing.
