The King of the Golden River

The King of the Golden River

Author: John Ruskin Format: Hardback Release Date: 07/03/2019

First published in 1851, John Ruskin's Victorian story, newly illustrated by Quentin Blake, tells the tale of the Black brothers: the kind-natured 11-year old Gluck and his two nasty older brothers, Hans and Schwartz. For Gluck, play is cleaning the floors, and his education consists of a wholesome quantity of punches. One stormy evening, Gluck is left at home to prepare his older brothers' dinner when an extraordinary-looking little man knocks at the door. Having been strictly warned not to let anyone in, Gluck watches as the little old man becomes increasingly drenched at the door. His soft heart tells him to ignore his brothers' advice, and so Gluck's encounter with the mysterious King of the Golden River begins. Appearing at first as a beggar, then the Southwest Wind, and finally as a Toby jug who Gluck unwittingly transforms into a dwarf, the King of the Golden River issues Gluck with a challenge: to climb to the source of the Golden River and cast into the stream three drops of holy water. If he can achieve this, the river will turn to gold.

100 Figures The Unseen Art of Quentin Blake

Author: Quentin Blake Format: Hardback Release Date: 06/09/2018

Quentin Blake's illustrations are instantly recognisable to millions of people around the world. A new exhibition to be held at London's House of Illustration will explore an unusual aspect of Blake's work, however, exhibiting for the first time 100 examples of his works of art. 100 Figures, will feature all of the 100 exhibited works - ranging from large-scale oil paintings to drawings and prints, created between the 1950s and today. Works included date back to his post-grad years in the 1950s when he struggled to make a living as an illustrator and took life-drawing classes at Chelsea School of Art. It was here that he first engaged with the human figure, but soon, having observed how the human body behaves, he found he was able to draw it from memory in any pose, working from his vivid imagination. 100 Figures will also offer the chance to catch a rare glimpse of early oil paintings by Blake - some painted on hardboard since he was unable to afford canvases at that time and painted using commercial house-painters' brushes.

J.P. Martin Father of Uncle, including the Unpublished Uncle

Author: J. P. Martin, Stella Martin Currey Format: Paperback / softback Release Date: 28/09/2017

The much-loved Uncle series of children's books were fantastical, surreal, funny and heart-warming. Originally told by Martin to his children, they were finally published when he was over eighty years old - and the hilarious array of characters, including the rich but sometimes foolish elephant, Uncle, captured the imagination of children across the world. Some more well-known fans include Neil Gaiman, Garth Nix, Kate Summerscale, Martin Rowson, Will Self and many more. Whilst exploring the J.P. Martin archive, editor Marcus Gipps stumbled across over fifty pages of unpublished Uncle stories, which are just as hilarious and well-crafted as the published work. He also discovered a fascinating biography of Martin, the missionary-turned-author, by his daughter, which explores the unique imagination and experiences that informed this remarkable and inventive genius. Both the additional Uncle stories and the biography have never been seen before, and Marcus would love to share them with Uncle's legions of fans, and also introduce J.P. Martin and Uncle to new readers.

A new unique Roald Dahl Dictionary from Oxford. This is not an ordinary dictionary. After all, you wouldn't expect an 'Oxford Roald Dahl Dictionary' to be ordinary, would you? Lots of dictionaries tell you what an 'alligator' is, or how to spell 'balloon' but they won't explain the difference between a 'ringbeller' and a 'trogglehumper', or say why witches need 'gruntles' eggs' or suggest a word for the shape of a 'Knid'. This dictionary does all those things. All the words that Roald Dahl invented are here, like 'biffsquiggled' and 'whizzpopping' to remind you what means what, but that is not all. You'll also find out where words came from, rhyming words, synonyms and lots of alternative words for words that are overused. Oxford Children's Dictionaries are perfect for supporting literacy and learning and this is the world's first Roald Dahl Dictionary from the word experts at Oxford University Press. With real citations from Roald Dahl's children's books and illustrations by Quentin Blake, this is authoritative, engaging and accessible and will inspire and encourage young writers and readers.

In this completely hilarious and gloriously absurd story, the pair behind the tales of Captain Najork explore just what happens when a man builds a new table ... a table sturdy enough for even an elephant to dance on. This table, said the man. What about the table? said the woman. It's wearing me out, said the man. What to do? The man makes a decision. He finds a tablewood tree, cuts it down, saws it up and makes a new table. There's nothing like a new table. This one is strong enough for elephants! But... Where would we get the elephants? said the woman. Advertise in the Classified Section, said the man. Elephants wanted for table work. Must be agile. It looks as if the man and the woman might need some more tables! We could open a restaurant, said the man. A restaurant with dancing elephants ... where will it all lead?!

Michael Rosen's Sad Book

Michael Rosen's Sad Book

Author: Michael Rosen Format: Paperback / softback Release Date: 30/12/2010

A heartbreakingly honest account of a father's grief for his son from the illustrious pairing of two former Children's Laureates. Very occasionally the term non-fiction has to stretch itself to accommodate a book that fits into no category at all. Michael Rosen's Sad Book is such a book. It chronicles Michael's grief at the death of his son Eddie from meningitis at the age of 19. A moving combination of sincerity and simplicity, it acknowledges that sadness is not always avoidable or reasonable and perfects the art of making complicated feelings plain. It wasn't made like any other book either; Michael Rosen said of the text, I wrote it at a moment of extreme feeling and it went straight down onto the page ... Quentin didn't illustrate it, he 'realized' it. He turned the text into a book and as a result showed me back to myself. No writer could ask and get more than that. And Quentin Blake says that the picture of Michael being sad but trying to look happy is the most difficult drawing he's ever done... a moving experience.

Collected Plays for Children

Author: Ted Hughes Format: Paperback / softback Release Date: 05/11/2001

This volume contains six plays by Ted Hughes which are particularly suitable for performance by children. Four of them were published originally under the title, The Coming of the Kings and Other Plays. Added to these are Orpheus and The Pig Organ, the former only ever published in America, the latter (which was written as a libretto) never before published. Hughes enters the timeless world of folklore and fable and brings home a wonderful haul, managing to produce comedy, tragedy and magic from the same net, and then to move effortlessly between them. He makes stories from familiar elements (the Nativity, or Beauty and the Beast or a quest to save a sickening king), but approaches them from unexpected angles and sets them off in different directions. What characterizes the pieces is the energy Hughes generates not only in the unfolding action but in the drama of the language itself, which is as robustly up-to-date as it is lyrical.
