Justin Miles is the founder of 'Just for the Challenge', a charity where funds are raised by taking on daring expeditions. His adventures include exploring the Arctic, climbing mountains, exploring deserts and hacking his way through jungles. All of Justin's experiences have been used to support charities and to fuel various education projects.
Justin turned his passion for adventure into his profession after a car accident in 1999 resulted in brain injuries which left him having to learn to walk and talk again from scratch. It was during his recovery that he decided that when he recovered he would become a 'full time' explorer and use his experiences to support charities and inspire children to learn through innovative education programmes.
Justin is a passionate supporter of the global education programme 'Educate A Child'.
Maps are wonderful things and this practical and inspiring book explains to children perhaps too used to relying on satnavs and iPhones how to use maps, and even how to make them. It’s full of fascinating facts on the different ways humans have invented to represent the world on paper and to safely navigate the globe. The information is clearly laid out and very attractive to look at, and this is a book to encourage browsing. Justin Miles is an explorer and adventurer and the final sections suggest kids head out on their own expeditions; they might very well be inspired to do that after reading this book. ~ Andrea Reece
March 15 Non-Fiction Book of the Month There’s a huge amount of information, and inspiration, contained in this rucksack-pocket-sized guide. Author and real-life explorer Justin Miles covers all the basics, including essential kit and how to pack it, and the key survival skills - lighting fires, tying knots, using a compass (there’s even one attached to the cover). He also describes the challenges of real life exploring in the world’s extreme climates, quoting examples from his own travels and from history. The information is clearly laid out, and the anecdotes and true life stories are fascinating. Justin comes across as exactly the kind of bloke it would be fun to trek with across the Arctic. Guaranteed to put kids in the mood for outdoor activities. ~ Andrea Reece *****Justin Miles is a passionate supporter of children's rights & his latest project is a spoon appeal to supply children in East Africa with a spoon to eat with which will in turn prevent the spread of disease. His publishers QED will donate a spoon for every copy of Ultimate Explorer Guide for Kids sold. Find out more in our blog here. Visit www.educatetheworld/just-a-spoon-appeal.
