September 2020 Book of the Month

Viking voyagers. Arctic adventurers. Female fossil-hunters. A professional pirate queen - this inspirational encyclopaedia is a feast of facts for inquisitive 5+ year-olds. Divided into sections covering explorers and discoverers, scientists and inventors, trailblazers and pioneers, builders, creators and thinkers, and daredevils and risk-takers, this covers all corners of the globe through history. What’s more, the appealing visuals (a mix of photos, drawings and funky graphics) draw young readers in and will surely spark plenty of off-the-page exploring.

There’s excellent coverage of inspirational female and BAME trailblazers, from 16-year-old Idris Galcia Welsh who embarked on an epic round-the-world driving trip in 1922, to Emily Roebling, who completed the construction of New York’s Brooklyn Bridge in the late 1800s. Then there’s Harriet Tubman, an abolitionist and political activist who risked her life helping slaves flee their owners, and dare-devil pilot Bessie Coleman, who made history when she became the first African American – male or female – to gain a pilot’s licence in 1921. All in all, this is a great gift that will keep on giving.

I loved this fun, bright and interesting book! Set out like a scrapbook of exciting events through world history, it is filled with incredible adventurers, scientists and daredevils. It made me want to keep reading and then go out and have adventures of my own!

I really loved this book. It is full of really interesting facts and not a single one of them is boring! It is the the sort of book you can pick up and read for a while then come back to later on and still find it just as fun and interesting. I like the fact that it looks like a scrapbook, with the paperclips and fun pictures. It looks bright and fun and colourful. Even the cover really grabs your attention with all the details and exciting facts from different periods of history. The cover really makes you want to pick up this book and then once you do, you just want to keep reading. I kept picking it up meaning to read just one page but then I'd end up reading lots!... Great encyclopedia about all sorts of adventurous topics. Full of colour and information, it would make a great Christmas present for older primary school children.

This is a really colourful book full of pictures and photos about lots of different things. I really like discovering new things everytime I open the book, especially about space. The book is enormous and so I learn something new everytime I open it up.... Read Full Review

Fascinating and compelling with so much to read and learn. We loved reading this together as a family!

We absolutely loved reading this book together as a family! We went through reading a few pages every night before bed and the boys were completely transfixed! There was a double page spread on each explorer/adventurer with interesting facts and information about them, as well as captivating pictures. It was good that a lot were more obscure rather than ones we made have already heard of as we all learnt lots. We would definitely read any other books in this series as it was so interesting and informative!
Aidan 8 - I really like learning about history and amazing people so this was really interesting. My favourite explorer was Roald Amundsen because he he made it to the South Pole and I think he was so brave!
Milo 5 - Yuri Gagarin was my favourite because he was the first person in space.... Read Full Review
