Stories entwine in this moving tale of one girl’s encounter with the legendary Bigfoot, and one young Sasquatch’s encounter with a human girl, and how they both navigate change
May 2021 Debut of the Month
Set against a beautifully woven remote North American landscape this is the story of twelve-year-old Minnie and her stepfather, Dan. The only thing they have in common is their love for Minnie’s mother who has recently passed away. But when Minnie and her friend Billy discover four giant footprints on a mountain trail, everything changes. Dan is sceptical, but Minnie thinks she knows better and lets her curiosity lead her on an adventure.
Kaayii is a young Sasquatch and he and his clan are perfectly at one with their mountain forest home. They are guardians of their environment and sensitive to every living thing, from the giant redwood tree, to the stealthy mountain lion and the yellow-eyed crow. When the clan are forced to move across the mountain to escape huge forest fires, they find their ancient paths blocked by the small development of holiday cabins Minnie’s mother has lovingly built…
As Minnie and Kaayii’s paths unexpectedly entwine, can they help each other, and heal their families?
A message from the editor, Penny Thomas; ‘Rod O’Grady tells us the stories of Minnie and Kaayii, creating an enchanting natural world with no sentimentality, anthropomorphism or humbug!’
Minnie is alone, high up in her favourite tree, looking out over a distant forest fire. She and her stepfather Dan are stuck with each other, living in their small cabin at the foot of the mountain after Minnie's mother died.
When Minnie and her friend Billy discover four giant footprints on a mountain trail, Dan puts it down to hoaxers. But Minnie knows better. Kaayii is sitting at the top a tree watching the smoke from a raging forest fire that has forced him and his clan to move to this side of the mountain. He's not sure about the humans living down by the sea below. Gradually their parallel worlds entwine in a moving tale of grief and healing in a remote mountain landscape.
‘A compelling story of courage, protecting nature and finding your way. Minnie and Kaayii are both young, curious and brave in their own worlds. I adored this story and found it enchanting and full of hope. I loved the parallels to the story as well as the way they intertwined and became one.’ Erin Hamilton, librarian
