Theo loves being outside. One day, at school, Theo's class have a visitor who gives all the children an acorn and tells them how to care for it - the children even get to bring it home after school. Theo loves his tiny 'tree-to-be'. He gives it a name, Oakie, and he makes sure to look after Oakie, taking it everywhere with him.
But when Theo and his mum go on holiday, Theo has to leave Oakie behind, and when they return home Oakie’s leaves are crunchy and brown and starting to fall off. Theo is worried about Oakie, but when he eventually musters up the courage to tell his mum and Granny what’s happened, they re assure him that Oakie will be fine again in the spring.
This story gently helps young readers explore big feelings such as worry, attachment and the fear of loss in a way that feels safe and age appropriate. Its thoughtful themes also make it a wonderful springboard for environmental learning, from classroom discussions about nature to hands on planting activities.
With its calm pacing and emotive storytelling, the book is perfectly suited to bedtime reading, classroom story time, or library programmes. Along the way, it encourages children to understand that it is okay not to have control over everything, and that patience, care and time can bring healing and growth. Ultimately, it offers reassuring comfort about life’s natural ups and downs.
