Would-be wizards of all ages will be informed and entertained by this very funny and surprisingly perspicacious, even poetic picture book.
Wizards, we learn, come in all shapes and sizes, which is encouraging, and the list of required wizard tools is pleasingly short. It does include a wand, described as ‘just a stick that feels good about itself.’ Magic, apparently, is shy and tends to hide, though sometimes, if you’re lucky, you can find it ‘between the beats of a bird’s wings.’ This lovely image is shattered on the next page in a perfect piece of comic timing when we see what happens should you not be lucky. But perhaps the best piece of advice is the line that says, ‘Real wizards don’t always know the way. They wonder. They try.’ Unless of course, there’s an explosion.
The humour is enhanced by Keith Negley’s quirky illustrations which, combined with the tongue-in-cheek narrative, find room for real magic. Newly trained readers will also enjoy Don’t Feed the Troll by Emily Gravett.
