More great reads: the best books for 13 year olds
"When I wasn’t reading this book I found myself still thinking about its world, Shadow of the Titan Hunter subtly clawed its way under my skin and lingered in my mind, ironic given certain turns of events."

This young adult fantasy crawled under my skin and lingered in my thoughts between reading. A compelling story with great characters and a magical twist on our world. Diving straight into the action without delay, much like Quinn’s late term arrival to the classified Yoden College for the Bleeding Bear, the reader must get their footing while on the move.
A magical college filled with knowledge of beasts, plants and titans it’s sworn to protect. Quinn is a loner, his lack of family connection to the school or prestige setting him apart on top of his late arrival so he keeps his head down in the library absorbing all the knowledge he can. Everything happens quite quickly at the beginning, there’s a prologue with a curious tale, a backstory delivered alongside a Titan waking, with Quinn drawn in and ultimately rescuing the college from imminent destruction, and Quinn’s own plans to embark on an expedition to search for dragons.
However the pace of the story does taper off and becomes a riveting magical adventure. Quinn’s journey is entertaining to follow, his wish for an expedition leads to misadventures alongside the college’s Hunters, alongside their Titan Hunter Chayce who begrudgingly brings him along. But the scholar in out of his depth soon starts to find his feet, and Quinn’s character arc was compelling to read.
I really loved that this magical school based story was still firmly based in the UK, it made me smile to be immersed in this magical world then hear familiar places like Chester, Derwent Water, Betws-y-coed. The interference of the government in the college affairs also adds an interesting nuance to the plotline.
When I wasn’t reading this book I found myself still thinking about its world, Shadow of the Titan Hunter subtly clawed its way under my skin and lingered in my mind, ironic given certain turns of events. The dragonlore’s dragon / wyvern argument made me chuckle and the ending leaves this gripping fantasy story poised to continue forward in future books.
