The Hawkweed Legacy

LoveReading4Kids Says

In a Nutshell: Sisterhood, suspense, sacrifice and romance

Spellbinding sequel in which a reluctant Queen of the Witches grapples with epic matters of the heart, soul, and magical realm.

Poppy Hooper, “the baby who’d been swapped for another, the child who had grown up in the wrong home with the wrong mother”, is a reluctant Queen of the Witches, and she’s now flown to Africa in the form of a swallow to a “seemingly boundless area of sloping hills and plains where animals, large and small, roamed wild”. Here, Teko and his medicine-maker grandmother take her in and promise to protect her. “I can look after myself.

I always have,” Poppy tells them but, despite her confidence, she is going to need someone on her side. For one thing, the fight for the throne far from over and, for another, she’s filled with longing for Leo, the boy she left behind. And then there’s her friendship with Ember. Their bond and sense of loyalty is strong, but is Ember safe? And can they all survive the looming attacks?

The language is both beautifully lyrical and smartly succinct, and the high-octane action is perfectly underpinned by elemental, archetypical concerns, among them love, loyalty, friendship, sacrifice and personal identity. This series surges adrenalin levels, and quickens the heart. ~ Joanne Owen
