LoveReading4Kids Says
Totally child-centred, infused with empathy, with freeing space for thought and reflection, Matthew Gray Gubler’s The Little Kid with the Big Green Hand is (ahem) a hands-down innovative heart-warmer.
“Once upon a time, a little baby was born with a BIG green Hand”, and this little baby grows to be a little kid by the name of Lenore. A girl who does everything possible to hide her big green hand out of fear of standing out as being different. Then, on the anxious eve of having to start at a new school, while having “nightmares of all the things her new classmates might call her when they saw her BIG green hand,” Lenore hears the big green hand talking! So, she unwraps the hand from the scarf it’s permanently hidden in, and lets it breathe. Turns out, the hand is called Chuck, and he has his own worries around the small pink blob he was born with.
Subtle touches of colour are introduced to the pages as Lenore and Chuck embark on an imaginative adventure that leads Lenore to experience an epiphany: “She never thought about looking at the world through someone else’s eyes.”
Like its characters, The Little Kid with the Big Green Hand is beautiful inside and out (it’s presented as a cloth-bound hardback with ribbon bookmark). It’s also a super-cool, super- creative ode to finding positive connections, and coming to feel connected to yourself, in all your glorious (green) technicolour.
