A nail-biting adventure for two siblings as they try to get back to England as the second world war comes to France. It’s May 1940 and siblings Tom and Alice travel with their mother to France to visit their father where he’s stationed with the B.E.F. Assured that they wouldn’t be allowed to travel if there was any danger, they reach where their father is stationed but the worst news arrives. War has come to France and now Tom and Alice are sent to Paris to relatives. But their journey is far from moth and when their train is bombed and their world is turned upside down they must find a new way to get home. Though the people and journey are fictional, this story is a good introduction to the key dates for early in WWII. Tom and Alice face a great deal of peril on their long journey with the risk of capture and worse looming. Thankfully the siblings encounter a cast of characters there to help, from local school teachers, farmers, a convent of nuns and a downed RAF Pilot also trying to get home. Their adventures across France lead to more than a few close calls that make for gripping reading. The author has done a great deal of research in order to bring the historical setting to life and the result is a thrilling, nail-biting historical adventure.

It’s May 1940. The phoney war shows no sign of ending so The Frostons are given permission to visit their father who is serving in the BEF in France. They arrive the day before Hitler launces his Blitzkrieg and become embroiled in the chaos that follows. Brother and sister Tom and Alice are sent back to Paris, but their train is bombed and their world is turned upside down. Initially taken in by a local school teacher and then farmers, they are briefly captured by the advancing enemy, but helped by Schiller, a young German conscript, they escape and eventually meet a downed RAF pilot and a nun with an unexpected background and skills. More adventures and close shaves follow and as the evacuation form Dunkirk looms, they eventually steal a sailing dinghy and attempt to sail home across the English Channel. Whilst the characters and many of the locations are fictional, the surrounding events are true, as are the timings, weather and even the phases of the moon.
