"A picture book celebration of boldness."
A little girl has the courage to look beyond a label in this compelling and strikingly illustrated picture book and is rewarded with a wild and magical journey as a result.
Her neighbours are scared of the beast, as they term it, which rumbles through their village at night. Cass watches it through the window and decides it’s hungry. Despite the fierce roar and sharp teeth, she offers it bread and in reply the bear, for that’s what it is, lifts her onto its back, ‘like a puppy.’
They go on an extraordinary journey, and it glows in Jill Calder’s bright, painterly, expansive illustrations, which also catch all the strength and exhilarating wildness of Bear. The townspeople watch her return and give Cass a new name too.
Young readers will love Cass’s bravery and her wild adventure and appreciate that it’s possible to be both fierce and gentle simultaneously, like her friend Bear. The Tiger Child by Michelle Beech is another picture book which explores the freedom that comes from recognising and embracing wildness.
When a fearful beast arrives in the township, Cass finds her courage and is rewarded with a wild and magical journey.
